BLeak detection
Is it a leak,
or is it July?
Memphis summers evaporate a lot of water. Before anyone digs or drains, it's worth knowing whether the pool is actually leaking.
Try the bucket test
Set a bucket on the pool step, fill it to the same level as the pool, and mark both water lines. Leave the pump on its normal schedule. After a day, compare: if the pool dropped noticeably more than the bucket, you're losing water to more than evaporation.
Other signs
- Wet spotsSoggy ground or puddles near the pool or the equipment pad.
- Air in the pumpBubbles in the pump basket or returns can point to a suction-side leak.
- Cracks & gapsAround fittings, skimmers, steps, or a liner pulling away.
- A rising water billTopping off far more often than you used to.

CPumps & filters
The heart
and the kidneys.
The pump moves the water and the filter cleans it. When either one quits, the pool turns on you fast in Mid-South heat.
Pump trouble
- Won't primeRuns but won't pull water, or loses prime.
- Loud or grindingScreeching, rattling or humming without moving water.
- Trips the breakerShuts off on its own or won't start.
- Leaking at the padWater under the pump or around the housing.
Filter trouble
- Cloudy waterWater won't clear even with good chemistry.
- High pressureGauge stays high even after a backwash or cleaning.
- Sand in the poolSand coming back through the returns.
- Old sandSand filters need a sand change every few seasons.

DOne repair, one afternoon
A skimmer,
start to finish.
May 22, two photos four hours apart. At 12:48 PM, a skimmer opening rusted out behind the faceplate. At 4:38 PM, a clean new opening being cut through the wall.
Skimmer and return fittings are where above-ground walls and liners fail first. Cracked faceplates, rusted openings and leaking gaskets usually don't mean the pool is finished. They mean the fitting needs to be done right.
